Ecology.
Consider the meaning of the term “ecology.” Select an area you would like to focus on (your favorite place or where you live). How do the basic chemicals (water, carbon, nitrogen) cycle through your ecosystem? You will want to include the main plants, animals, and the biome.
Sample Answer
Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment. It is a broad field that encompasses many different topics, including the study of populations, communities, ecosystems, and landscapes.
My favorite place is a temperate forest. Temperate forests are characterized by mild winters and warm summers. They are home to a wide variety of plants and animals, including trees, shrubs, wildflowers, ferns, mosses, fungi, insects, birds, mammals, and amphibians.
Water, carbon, and nitrogen cycle through the temperate forest ecosystem in the following ways:
-
Water cycle: Water enters the temperate forest ecosystem through precipitation. It then falls to the ground or is intercepted by plants. The water that falls to the ground may infiltrate the soil and become groundwater, or it may flow over the surface as runoff. The water that is intercepted by plants is either used by the plant for photosynthesis or it evaporates back into the atmosphere.
