Early Medieval Europe – Viking Age

Description

Please make an offer if you are knowledgeable and if you can follow the instructions.

Write an essay that analyses and responds to the arguments presented in ONE OF the following
essays: (Attached are the readings)

Lesley Abrams, “Diaspora and identity in the Viking Age,” Early Medieval Europe 20.1 (2012),
17-38.

Guy Halsall, “Playing by whose rules? A further look at Viking atrocity in the ninth century,”
Medieval History 2 no. 2 (1992), pp. 2-12.

Brian Smith, “The Picts and the Martyrs, or Did the Vikings Kill the Native Population of
Orkney and Shetland?” Northern Studies 36 (2001), 7-31.

As part of your discussion, locate at least TWO scholarly books, articles or book chapters
on the same or a closely related topic and incorporate them into your discussion. (Please
note that TWO is a minimum.) Locate and incorporate ONE primary source text.

Analysis and reflection are equally important in this assignment. You may provide a brief
summary of the essay, but you must assess the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments
presented and explain why you agree or disagree, with reference to the other sources that you
have utilized.

Explain how the additional secondary works that you have chosen contribute to the subject and
how they relate to the essay you are analyzing. Strive to include an historiographical dimension
to your overview – that is, explain how scholarship on the topic has developed, evolved, or
changed, and explore the differing views held by scholars on the subject, where possible. Be
sure to explain how the primary source that you have located relates to the topic.

Note that the quality and suitability of the sources that you locate factors significantly into the
grade of the paper, so choose wisely. Including general or non-scholarly works or using web
resources from unreliable sources will not result in first-class grades. You should seek to
include specialized works by scholars in the field.
Include a properly formatted title-page, foot- or end-notes, and bibliography. Include word
count on your title page.
