Distinct Japanese and American cultural values
Description
The discussion board for this week will continue to develop your ability to synthesize information we have learned from the readings so far this semester.
In the module for this week is a folder called Materials for Gung Ho where you will find several additional readings. Read through these, and pull information from the previous weeks, to answer the following questions.
- Begin by identifying and describing distinct Japanese and American cultural values that you see in the film.
- Describe the cultural conflicts and discuss how they were resolved.
- Noted film critic Roger Ebert writes, “The movie feels more like an attack on labor unions than a clash of alien cultures, and the message seems to be that the American car industry would be as successful as the Japanese if our workers were willing to work for $8 an hour, seven days a week, with unpaid overtime, just because of their patriotic pride.” Do you agree with the words of Mr. Ebert? Do you think a system like he described could be implemented in the US? Why, or why not?
