Data Collection and Analysis
Field Observations •Since you are conducting a qualitative study, you
will need to include field observations as part of your data collection procedures. Summarize the method(s) you
will use to conduct your observations and then describe how you will code and analyze and interpret the data
you gathered and transcribed from participant or nonparticipant observations in your descriptive and reflective
field notes answering the questions listed below.
Questions
•What, when, how, and who will you observe?•Where will you be situated on the participant/observer
continuum?
•How will you collect your descriptive field notes?
•What additional observations will you make in your reflective field notes?
•How will you begin to identify the themes, categories that will emerge as you sort through the raw data?

Questions (continued)
•How will you account for your personal biases and assumptions in your notes/field notes/observations?
•In what ways will you link your conclusions with your research question(s)?
•What information will you use from supplemental readings that focus on your topic? (please cite at least 5 of
your sources)
•What questions do you still have about data collection and analysis as it pertains to your planned field
observation?
