Dance review

The following are eight documentaries you may select from. Remember, you’ll only need to choose two to
watch and then you’ll write a reflection paper on those two that addresses differences and similarities in

style, in creative process, in life experiences, in the way they run their companies, in the topics that

inspire them.
Remember that these are documentaries, so you aren’t watching a “performance” – you’re watching the
behind-the-scenes moments, the rehearsal process, the day-to-day effort of being a choreographer and
dancer.
They are all private linked to the appropriate films:
Pina Bausch – Pina (Links to an external site.)
Bill T. Jones – A Good Man (Links to an external site.)
Paul Taylor – Dancemaker (Links to an external site.)
(Links to an external site.)Okwui Okpokwasili – Bronx Gothic (Links to an external site.)
Ohad Naharin – Mr. Gaga (Links to an external site.)
Marina Abramovic – The Artist is Present (Links to an external site.)
Jiri Kylian – Forgotten Memories (Links to an external site.)
Sylvie Guillem – On the Edge (Links to an external site.)
In the case of choreographers like Pina Bausch and Paul Taylor, they’ve passed on, so these films serve

to remember the mark they’ve left. In the case of Marina Abramovic, she’s not considered a

‘choreographer’ nor a
‘dancer’ – she’s a performance artist, who’s used her body in some remarkable, profound performances

that are closer to visual art than to dance, but I still would love to share her work with you.
