Current social problem covered in the news media
Select a current social problem covered in the news media that relates to a topic we discussed during this class (e.g., gendered dynamics of reproductive politics; gendered experiences in the criminal-legal system, etc.). In a 5-page double-spaced paper, (1) describe the current social problem drawing on legitimate news sources and (2) use three course readings to analyze how gender dynamics manifest in the discourses surrounding the social problem and how people experience that social problem.
Organization:
Introduction: In the opening paragraph, briefly introduce the social problem (what is it and why is it important?) and how research discussed in this course will guide your analysis of the problem. This paragraph should include citations from legitimate news sources to describe the social problem. Your introduction should have an original thesis statement.
Body paragraphs: In coherent paragraphs, use course readings to analyze how gender manifests in different dimensions of the social problem you selected. For example, how is gender manifested in discussions of the problem via news media? How do certain people experience gender based on the existence of this social problem? Use that description to explain the social problem in further detail.
Conclusion: In the closing paragraph, briefly summarize your thesis statement and why discussion of the social problem you selected is important.

The Gendered Impact of Climate Change: A Case Study
Introduction
Climate change, a pressing global issue, disproportionately affects women and marginalized communities worldwide. This paper will examine the gendered dimensions of climate change, drawing on scholarly literature and current news events to illustrate how women and gender-nonconforming individuals experience the impacts of climate change differently. By analyzing these gendered dynamics, we can better understand the complex ways in which climate change exacerbates existing social inequalities.
