The United States is often described as a "tossed salad" of distinct cultural identities, each with a unique history of arrival and specific contemporary challenges. Understanding these backgrounds is essential for navigating the social landscape of a multicultural society.

1. Mexican Americans

Mexican Americans have a dual history of migration and indigenous presence. Following the Mexican-American War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848), the border moved over many Mexicans living in the Southwest. Subsequent waves arrived during the Mexican Revolution (1910) and for labor opportunities through the Bracero Program.

Social Problems: Present challenges include navigating complex immigration policies and the "stigmatization" of the community through political rhetoric. Additionally, Mexican Americans often face significant disparities in healthcare access and representation in higher education.

2. Chinese Americans

The first major wave of Chinese immigrants arrived in the mid-19th century, primarily driven by the California Gold Rush and the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. They sought economic relief from the Taiping Rebellion and poverty in China. However, they were met with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the first law to prevent a specific ethnic group from immigrating.
