Cultural beliefs and ideas are displayed regarding disability
Film can be analyzed by researchers as a cultural tool to understand the child and disability further, producing
insights into a changing world. Film is a tool to analyze text where social, economic, political views demonstrate
cultural beliefs and ideas. The social construction of a child and disability may not always be obvious, remember
key concepts (social construction, special, normal, dominant voice, paternalism, and other) from multiple readings.
From the list of films provided write a five – seven (5-7) page analysis of the film. Some questions to
focus on are the following:
- Who is narrating the film?
- How is the child socially constructed in the film?
- In what ways does the film discuss normal and different?
- What Cultural beliefs and ideas are displayed regarding disability?
- What Model of Disability is displayed in the film?
- Were there examples of Ableism in the film? If so, provide examples
- Were there actual disabled actors/actresses in the film?
