Review the photos on Brightspace in the folder “Discussion Web” (under “content” see left hand side) 1) Reviewing your notes from discussion and the pictures of our discussion web that are posted on Brightspace, pick one phrase, or sentence, or theme that emerged in discussion (for instance, “new subjectivity” or “sexual emancipation” or “with the effect that is like a slingshot,” or any phrase you have written that you think is important) and describe this phrase as it relates to one or two texts we read or certain media we watched. State what the phrase is and state the work from our syllabus that you are connecting the phrase to. Explain what is most provocative about it/ what about it grabs your attention. 2) Pick another work on our syllabus which has stirred in you emotions, or is a work about which you are passionate, or is a work that agitated you. Why do you like it or not like it? Identify a passage or a scene and try to braid it (connect it) with another work of literature you read in a different class, or with a political or social event that is in Canadian or international news recently. Thus, for the writing assessment you will write about at least two different works from our syllabus. Choose works about which you are passionate. Prepare the following about each work: 1) Name and date of the work (article, book excerpt, film, drama, etc) and name of author. 2) Short (3-4 sentences) summary of the part or aspect of the text you are going to respond to. 3) Provocative point – what you noticed when reading the text that was unusual, interesting, relevant to our course themes and goals, provocative and grabbed your attention 4) State your opinion – your answer to why it’s provocative and important 5) Mark with your notes illustrative examples that you want to weave into your response.
