NO WIKIPEDIA, NO COPY, AND PASTE. THE PAPER IS A PROFILE PAPER ON PATRICK KEARNEY. YOU ARE ALLOWED
TO USE MURDERPEDIA.
THE SERERIAL KILLER I AM PROFILING IS PATRICK KEARNEY
Profile Paper (100pts) and Presentation (50pts): (200 points)
This will be your semester paper project and will consist of two parts. In order to get credit for
this assignment, BOTH parts have to be completed.
Part I (100pts): You will provide me with a typed 12-point font (Times New Roman) paper of at least
five pages in length (double-spaced) with 1? margins. The paper will consist of a cover page and
reference page (not included in the five page requirement). Look at your handout for specifics on
this assignment. Email me your paper on the day of your presentation.
Part II (50pts): You will present the class with a PowerPoint presentation on the topic of your
paper. This presentation will be at least 10 minutes in length (no longer than 12 min). I will have
more information on this as the semester progresses. If you are sick or not ready to present on the
day of your presentation, I will deduct 50% off your entire project score and you will be given
another day to present (if possible). Failure to present will constitute a ?0? for the entire
assignment.
MORE INFORMATION ON PAPERInstructions: To do this assignment you will need to find news articles
and/or other information (e.g., court documents, online sources) about a particular crime or series
of crimes. You may be given a crime where the offender has not been caught (e.g., news accounts of
serial offenders — rapists, burglars, bank robbers, etc) or where the offender has been
identified. Your task is to analyze the crime based on the available information about the offense
behavior/ crime scene evidence. If the offender has not been caught you obviously won?t have access
to complete crime scene details but will still be able to construct an analysis or ?profile? of the
?type? (class) of offender(s) most likely to have committed the crime and come as close as possible
to identifying as many (individual) characteristics possible. If you are given a crime where the
offender has been identified, your task is to write an analysis of the crime scene evidence and
criminal behavior to explain the offender?s motivation, characteristics, background etc.
You will need to include the following in your profile:
Overview of established facts of the case (regarding the offender, victim, crime scene
characteristics).
Hypothesis regarding offender?s characteristics, ?type?, motivation, MO and signature, etc.
Theoretical analysis. To explain the criminal behavior that you choose, you may relyon a theory or
theories covered in class and readings. You may also design your own theory based on the components
of theories covered in class. If you create your own theory, I expect that you will describe the
foundation in which it is based.
Investigative and interrogation suggestions based on the profile you?ve developed OR if the
offender has already been caught, discuss interrogation/ interviewing and correctional
management/treatment strategies.
Discussion of the shortcomings/weaknesses of your profile — further facts/information needed, gaps
in the facts and logical sequence of events, and assumptions upon whichprofile is based.
You will be graded on your ability to utilize what you?ve learned in the course to develop a
detailed comprehensive profile based on the existing knowledge available on criminal behavior,
typologies, and profiling. You should organize your analysis/profile along the lines of the case
assessment format outlined in the Monster of Florence handout, but feel free to add other sections
where applicable (start out with a background on your profile). Your profile/analysis should be a
minimum of 6 pages (8 pg maximum), typed, Times New Roman, 12-pt font, double-spaced with copies of
the news articles you used for your paper attached. Attach a cover page and a reference page (not
counted as your page count). 150pts
Presentations: You will next provide a PowerPoint presentation of your profiled case to the class.
You will also email your presentation on the day that you present along with your profile paper.
You can use the format I used with the Jessica Ridgeway case if you like. The presentation should
be between 10-12 minutes in length. 50pts
