Discussion one: (Creating a Democratic Paradise: The Progressive Era) A pervasive spirit of reform characterized the Progressive Era. One facet of this reform mindedness concerned the attempt to curb the excesses of big business. Discuss an attempt by government, an organization, or individual to limit the power, control, and wealth of large corporations.
Discussion two: (Imperial America: The United States in the World ) The illustrations, cartoons, and paintings that appear in Chapter 19 reveal a great deal about the history of early American imperialism. Choose one of the images reproduced below and provide its historical context--and, where applicable, explain what commentary or criticism its creator is implicitly offering. (The images that uploaded in files are featured in the same order in which they appear in Chapter 19).
Discussion three: (The Great War: World War I) Chapter 20 focuses more on the impact of World War I on the United States than it does on the actual war itself (which was mainly fought in Europe). Discuss one of the war's effects back in America identified in the chapter (i.e., the politicized debate over American neutrality, mobilization of the general population to facilitate the war effort, wartime government propaganda and censorship, government suppression of civil liberties, the migration northward of African Americans, the women's suffrage movement, the Spanish Influenza, etc.).
