- Discuss the consequences of populism. Make sure your essay includes a discussion of at least three
aspects of populism that may be a reason for concern and why. Discuss also at least two ”lessons”
presented by Weyland (2020). To complete those taks, use at least three papers in your essay: - Two papers must be from the required readings of days 19 and 20
- The third paper must be either from the readings or one that you found online. You can use
any paper listed in the syllabus, including recommended or required from previous lectures. If
you use a paper not listed in the syllabus, the paper must be published in an academic outlet.
Magazine or newspaper articles won’t count as a third paper. If you are unsure whether you
can use a paper that you have found online, you can e-mail the TA for advice. - You are free to use more than three papers. The extra papers are optional. In this case,
you can use articles published in academic journals or well-known media outlets (e.g., New
York Times, Washington Post, etc.). Blog posts of unknown sources or citing content from
Wikipedia are not allowed. If you are unsure whether you can use a paper that you have
found online, you can e-mail the TA for advice. - You can use lecture or section slides to guide your essay, but do not use them as source of
citation in your essay. - Make sure you mention explicitly the paper that contains the argument you are discussing. For
instance, you may say something like ”According to Weyland (2020), populism leads to. . . ” - Although the discussion about the ”lessons”must come from Weyland (2020), the discussion
about the aspects of populism that raise concerns for some scholars can come from either
one or multiple papers. But even if you draw most of the discussion from a single paper, you
are still expected to use the minimum number of papers required and connect them to the
main discussion of your essay.
