Communications and Media – Theorists

Description

This paper requires the knowledge of theorists and it requires the use of lecture notes and readings. Please make an offer if you are already knowledgable in Communications and Media. I attached a sample lecture note. I will add more once I assign it to a writer.

Please choose 2 questions from the list of 3 questions below and write 2 short essays (5 pages each,
minimum/maximum, not including title page and Reference List) that respond to the questions chosen.
Essays must draw on material covered in the readings and lectures.

1) A recurring concern of this semester has been the ways in which “new” media technologies
affect communications activities. Please identify three theorists that you think are especially
concerned with this problem and contrast and compare their approaches to this problem. Do
you find one theory/theorist more persuasive and/or useful to still study new media
technologies emerging within contemporary society? Why or why not?
a. A persuasive answer will identify details specific to the theories with which you are
working; synthesize the arguments contained in a reading; argue whether you find one
theory/theorist more persuasive than the other; and speak to a contemporary “new”
media technology.

2) What does the study and theorization of audiences contribute to our understanding of media?
Please explain with reference to, and integration/citation of, at least three theories/theorists
that you see as particularly concerned with the role/place of audiences.
a. A persuasive response will clearly identify what specific theorists argue about audiences
and speak to both the overlaps and differences evident within these engagements with,
and studies of, audiences.

3) How would you define and explain functionalism in Communication and Media Studies theories?
Which theorists would you locate within this tradition? Are these theories and theorists still
useful for studying contemporary media culture? Why or why not?
a. A persuasive response will define functionalism; reference and cite the theorists that
you think demonstrate this inclination; and anchor key arguments/insights from this
mode of inquiry within a contemporary media issue/example. A critical assessment of
this theoretical approach should engage with specific arguments and findings
articulated by relevant theorists.

Each essay is worth 15 marks:
? 5 marks for formal features, including: grammar, spelling, sentence and paragraph structure,
and adherence to APA Style Guide formatting
? 5 marks for structure and clarity of argumentation, including: articulation of a thesis statement,
presence and organization of supporting arguments, fit between arguments and evidence
? 5 marks for substance, including: comprehensiveness, degree of detail offered to support
answers, and insight (both critical and creative) into the readings and issues engaged in class
Essays will be written in standard English; contain references (and a References List) that refers
to lectures and the textbook; conform to all standard conventions of academic writing; follow
the APA citation format, include pagination and a title page; and contain proper formatting
(standard margins, double-spaced, and 12-pt Times New Roman font).
