Combined Genotype Profile Frequency

To complete these questions, you may want to first watch the DNA Forensics lecture, and/or look at this helpful page on http://www.biology.arizona.edu/human_bio/activities/blackett2/str_frequency.html
Let’s assume that for all 16 STR markers you examined, every allele for every marker has a population frequency of 0.3 (in reality, most are probably much lower, but we’ll just use 0.3 for all for ease of calculation). Complete the following calculations with that assumption of pop. freq. = 0.3 for all alleles:
a) If all the genotypes for all 16 STR markers in your analysis were homozygous, what would the population frequency be for that combined genotype profile? Briefly explain how you did the calculation.
b) If all the genotypes for every STR marker in your analysis were heterozygous, what would the population frequency be for that combined genotype profile? Briefly explain how you did the calculation.
What is the approximate current world population?
Based on the population frequency you calculated in question 1 part b, about how many people in the world would you expect to have that specific combined genotype profile?
If a match is found in CODIS for the DNA from under the victim’s fingernails, do you think that person is likely to have committed the murder? Explain why or why not.
