Dramatic play materials
Manipulatives
Language
Dolls
Books
Posters, photos, etc.
Louise Derman-Sparks recommends reviewing a list like this at least once a year, preferably with any colleagues you share a room with. The checklist is also a useful tool for observing and assessing programs you observe or are considering working in.

Hypothetical Classroom: A Kindergarten Setting

Chosen Sections for Assessment:

  1. Dramatic Play Area:
  2. Book Nook/Library:
  3. Dolls and Manipulatives Area:

Evaluation and Recommendations:

1. Dramatic Play Area:

  • Current State:
    • The dramatic play area is set up as a “house,” with a kitchen, table, and dress-up clothes.
    • Dress-up clothes include primarily stereotypical “princess” and “firefighter” costumes.
    • Kitchen utensils are predominantly plastic and represent Western-style cooking.
  • Analysis:
    • While the area encourages imaginative play, it lacks diversity. The limited costume options reinforce gender stereotypes.
    • The kitchen setup doesn’t reflect the diversity of food and cooking styles in the community.
  • Recommendations:
    • Expand Dress-Up Options: Include a wider variety of costumes that represent different cultures, professions, and gender expressions (e.g., doctor’s scrubs, artist smocks, traditional clothing from various cultures).
    • Diversify Kitchen Materials: Add cooking utensils and play food that reflect diverse cultures (e.g., chopsticks, tortillas, curry spices).
    • Introduce Community Themes: Rotate dramatic play themes to reflect different community settings (e.g., a market, a post office, a global restaurant), incorporating diverse roles and perspectives.
    • Add culturally diverse fabrics: Adding different types of fabrics, and textures can add depth to the dramatic play area.

Book Nook/Library:

  • Current State:
    • The book nook has a comfortable seating area and a variety of picture books.
    • Most books feature characters that are white and from middle-class families.
    • Some books address diversity, but they often focus on single-issue themes (e.g., a book about a child with a disability).
  • Analysis:
    • The book selection lacks representation of diverse cultures, family structures, and abilities.
    • Single-issue diversity books can unintentionally “other” children, rather than normalizing diversity.
  • Recommendations:
    • Diversify Book Selection: Include books that feature characters from various racial and ethnic backgrounds, different family structures (e.g., single-parent families, LGBTQ+ families), and children with disabilities.
    • Integrate Diversity Throughout: Ensure diversity is represented in all books, not just those specifically about diversity.
    • Include Books in Multiple Languages: If the community has multiple languages spoken, include books in those languages.
    • Add books that show different ways of living: Books about children living in different countries, or different environments, such as rural, or urban.

3. Dolls and Manipulatives Area:

  • Current State:
    • Dolls are primarily light-skinned with traditional hair.
    • Manipulatives include blocks and puzzles.
    • The puzzles and blocks are fairly standard, and do not include much diversity.
  • Analysis:
    • The dolls don’t reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the children.
    • The manipulatives could be more diverse, and culturally inclusive.
  • Recommendations:
    • Provide Diverse Dolls: Include dolls with various skin tones, hair textures, and physical abilities.
    • Introduce Culturally Diverse Manipulatives: Add puzzles with images of diverse families and communities, blocks with cultural symbols, and multicultural art supplies.
    • Add sensory items: add sensory items that are culturally diverse, and that include a variety of textures.
    • Ensure that all children are represented: Make sure that all children can see themselves represented in the dolls and manipulatives.

General Recommendations for Language, Posters, and Photos:

  • Language:
    • Use inclusive language that avoids gender stereotypes and acknowledges diverse family structures.
    • Display signs and labels in multiple languages.
    • Encourage children to learn basic phrases in different languages.
  • Posters and Photos:
    • Display posters and photos that represent diverse cultures, families, and abilities.
    • Include images of children and adults engaged in diverse activities and professions.
    • Make sure that the images are current, and not stereotypical.
    • Include photos of the children and their families, within the classroom.

By implementing these changes, the classroom environment will become more inclusive and supportive of all children, fostering a sense of belonging and respect for diversity.
