Think about the three pairs of benefits and responsibilities discussed in this reading:  individual freedom and self-reliance  equality of opportunity and competition  material wealth and hard word Topic Imagine that Indiana University has been invited you to write an essay that will appear in a handbook that will be distributed to newly arrived international students. The goal of your essay is to help these students make sense of their new lives as students at Indiana University and as temporary residents of the United States. Select one phenomenon from each of the following areas of the adventure that the newly arrived students are about to embark on:  contemporary US politics  contemporary US popular culture (films, TV, music, …)  academic and/or social life as a student at Indiana University Choose phenomena that you think will come as a surprise or will be confusing to newly arrived international students. Write an essay in which you seek to describe, analyze, and explain (de-mystify) each of the three (3) phenomena you have selected, making reference to one or more of the US American cultural assumptions and values discussed in DCK, pp. 31-37. You should write your essay in academic English, but remember that the intended audience consists of newly arrived international students. You should not assume that all of your readers will be from your own home country, but you may find it helpful to consider what might well be confusing for someone from your home country.
