Change in artistic style during the Amarna period

What do you personally think might be the reason for the change in artistic style during the Amarna period? Even if the religion changed, why did the art change so much? Could Atenism have existed with the older more traditional style of Egyptian art, or was the change really necessary to reflect religious belief? (Can you think of examples of details or features in the art that reflect this?) Moreover, do you think Akhenaten was a very religious man who truly believed in the Aten religion he formed, or was it a more of a political movement that he couched in religious terms?
