I’m working on a Psychology writing question and need support to help me understand better.

You are going to synthesize and apply your knowledge of operant conditioning by identifying a bad habit that you would like to change. Habits (instrumental behaviors that have become automatic) are, by nature, difficult to change! However, researchers who study habits and habit change note that the first step is to examine the reinforcements and punishments that influence the behavior, but that have become automatic (e.g., Wood, Quinn, & Kashy, 2002; Neal et al., 2011; Neal, Wood, & Drolet, 2013).
