Case Mix Index (CMI)
Case Mix Index (CMI)
Order Description
IPPS: The top 25 MS-DRGs for Hospital A are provided in the attached LP6 Assignment Worksheet. Calculate the case mix index in the spreadsheet for this MS-DRG set.
How to calculate case mix index:
Take the average of the sum of the RW's (relative weight) of all patients treated during a specified time period.
However, in our table we also have the Volume for each DRG (number of times each DRG was reported at this hospital) so we have to do a Weighted Average.
Instructions:
1. Review the MS-DRGs in the table
2. Indicate whether each is Surgical or Medical and place an S or M in the Type column
3. Calculate the weighted average for each DRG
• Volume x RW = Weighted Average
4. Add up total volume (all of the numbers in the Volume column)
5. Add up the Weighted Average column
6. Divide the total Weighted Average by total volume. This is your Case Mix Index (CMI)
