Cartoon panel
Respond to EITHER of the following two questions: The writer is free to pick a question and write about it. If the writer decides to do question 2b please send me the cartoon or comic so that I can get approval from the prof first. But I will prefer question 2 a if the writer can do it.
Question 2a
Apply the following Hindu parable to the study of philosophy. Evaluation is based on the demonstration of comprehension and application of course material, both lecture and assigned text readings. Be sure to explain your response. The use of illustrative examples is encouraged.
It was six men of Indostan
To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the elephant
(Though all of them were blind).
That each by observation
Might satisfy his mind.
[The first man of Indostan touches the animal’s side and thinks it must be
some sort of living wall. The second touches a tusk and thinks an elephant is
like a spear. The others, in turn, touch the trunk, an ear, the tail, a knee – “snake,”
“fan,” “rope,” “tree.”]
And so these men of Indostan
Disputed loud and long,
Each in his own opinion
Exceedingly stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right
And all were in the wrong.

Question 2b
Using an example of a cartoon panel, comic strip or song lyrics, explain how philosophical issues can be found in common, everyday “real world” experiences. You must supply a copy of the comic or lyrics. Evaluation is based on the demonstration of comprehension and application of course material, both lecture and assigned text readings. Be sure to explain your response. The use of illustrative examples is encouraged.
Assignment guidelines: The book that we are using is called “ From wonder to wisdom”
- (Informal) documentation is REQUIRED. This includes references, paraphrases and direct quotations from lectures and the text. Quotations, direct or indirect, must be acknowledged and appropriately documented. Plagiarism, intentional or accidental, can result in a “0”. You must document any and all lecture and text references and direct quotations. When documenting, you may choose the format, but parenthetical mentions are the easiest (Wonder, 23) (Russell 6), (Quillen 2/21/19).
- This is not a research paper. You are restricted to using resources from this course: lecture, personal experience (for examples), and the course readings [question 2-B is an exception]. You are neither expected nor encouraged to use outside sources beyond common reference materials, such as a dictionary. Do not include a formal bibliography.
