But Is It Art

This is a book report on Cynthia Freeland, But Is It Art? Oxford Press. Without fanfare, begin with a clear and detailed statement of the author’s thesis. Proceed directly to an explanation of the line of argument in support of that thesis. This is the same as showing what the author hopes to persuade the reader to believe, and how he or she seeks to persuade the reader to believe that. Précis should indicate how the chapters of the book relate to each other. Be careful to avoid any evaluation of your own, however subtle or seemingly innocent. This means you should avoid the use of evaluation. For example, if the author seeks to demonstrate some proposition P, be careful not to say that the author demonstrates P. This is evaluation, not exposition. A précis proper does not include critical evaluation.
