Nine building blocks of a business model

• Customer Relationships
What type of relationships are required and how will you nurture and maintain these? As an organization, you likely want to have returning customers or donors. It is important to consider the type of relationship that you want to have with your customers. Some organizations prefer a personalized service and others prefer something that is more automated, because that works best for their organization. By identifying the type of relationship that you want to have with your stakeholders will allow you to create strategies that can support this.

• Cost Structure
Are you cost-driven or value-driven? Cost structure considers whether your organization identifies with minimizing all costs or focuses on value. For social enterprises, it is typically a combination of both.

• Revenue Streams
How are you going to generate revenue? For some business, this is through profit. For others, it is through donations or government funding. Some enterprises use both types of methods to generate revenue. Consider the output and how you will sustain your growth by engaging in different types of revenue generating activities. The key here is to diversify how you generate revenue so that your organization is not dependent on one source.
