One prominent example of a corporation committing a crime against the environment is the case of Volkswagen’s “Dieselgate” scandal.  

What Happened:

In 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States discovered that Volkswagen had intentionally programmed its diesel cars to activate emissions controls only during emissions testing. In real-world driving conditions, these vehicles emitted up to 40 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxides (NOx), harmful pollutants that contribute to smog and respiratory problems.  

The Damage:

• Environmental Harm: The excess NOx emissions from these vehicles significantly contributed to air pollution, posing risks to public health and the environment. NOx can cause respiratory issues, acid rain, and contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone.  
• Financial Penalties: Volkswagen faced massive fines and penalties from governments and regulatory bodies around the world. They were ordered to pay billions of dollars in settlements, recalls, and criminal penalties.
