“Blackfish” Movie Analysis
Watch “Blackfish” in the films folder. This is a film that offers an argument against orca captivity and that challenges many of the assumptions we make about animal entertainment.
Many of you may have already seen the film, but it is posted just in case. As with each of our discussions, my expectations are that you link aspects of the film to lectures, readings and other course material. Your personal reflections are valuable here, but be sure that you try to remain connected to the topic at hand. I have a few prompts below to get you started, but am open to whatever direction you choose as long as it connects to the film and class material.
Please note – I am not looking for a review of the film in these discussions, but for links to aspects of the film that you can link to the course.
Here are few prompts – again just as way to get you started.
What are some of the ways that SeaWorld promotes their shows? What do they say is the benefit and how does this compare with some of what we are learning in class?
Discuss the idea that orca “shows” are educational. What do critics argue about this? Link to course material as you discuss this.
Discuss some of the ways that SeaWorld justifies their existence. Counter these with some of what you are learning in class.
SeaWorld argues that their orca are “well cared for”. In light of what you learned in the film and in class, what does this mean?
Marine Mammal parks don’t just keep orca in captivity. They have seal, penguin and dolphin shows too. Can you expand this discussion to include those animals too?
