Big Business / Organized Labor late 1800’s
- CREATE AN ADVERTISEMENT: Create an Advertisement/Poster for ONE of the following populations in the West in the late 1800s: Chinese immigrants, Mexican Americans, African Americans, or newly arrived Eastern European immigrants. Keep in mind, your job is to convince your chosen group to move to the West, so as any good ad man, you must “sell” the West to a particular demographic. Advertisements must be colorful, persuasive, include both images and text, and contain three (3) to five (5) specific pieces of relevant historical information from the textbook and/or outside scholarly sources on both reasons for settlement and/or characteristics of the settlers. Conclude with a 300-350 word analysis of the challenges and opportunities your immigrants experienced, incorporating the items from your poster, and most importantly, why these people would have gambled all they owned and their very lives to move West. What did they have to gain (or lose)? Furnish all appropriate facts with sources and citations. Use the software you know to create your ad but save your file as a .pdf to upload for universal access.

- CREATE A MAGAZINE ARTICLE: Imagine you are a news reporter sent West to cover Native American resistance. Select 2-3 incidents between 1860-1890 and create a 300 to 350-word magazine article briefly describing the events but use the majority of your piece to examine the factors leading to increased conflict between Anglos and Native Americans in the West? Why was violence so common? Was a peaceful resolution possible? Why or why not? Be sure to include drawings, paintings, maps, etc. in your article and a front cover for your magazine (since your article is the lead story for that issue). Give specific examples to support your article and include the relevant facts and citations for your answer. You can use your software of choice to create your project but save your file as a .pdf (this seems to be the best choice).

- CREATE A RALLY POSTER and SPEECH to Organize a Steel Workers Union: Create a recruitment poster and then a 300 to 350-word speech for a union rally in the late 1800s. How will the union organizer persuade the steel workers that it is in their best interest to join the union? Address the concerns for each of the various ethnic groups in that community? How will you, as the union organizer, allay fears over the owner’s response? Will you promote violence or peace? Why or why not? Posters must be colorful, persuasive, include both images and text, and contain three (3) to five (5) specific issues for joining the Union and then draft the accompanying 300 to 350-word speech convincing steel workers to sign-up. Your speech must be engaging and compelling including the issues from your poster. Use concrete examples from factual material and don’t forget to include citations and sources—of course. Again, use whichever software you wish but save your file as a .pdf.

- CREATE A MAGAZINE ARTICLE: Imagine you are a news reporter sent to interview John D. Rockefeller. Create a 300 to 350-word magazine article using Rockefeller’s comment that “the day of individual competition . . . is past and gone” as a starting point. Describe both the advantage and disadvantages of working for Standard Oil. What contribution(s) does Standard Oil makes to economic growth according Rockefeller? How does Rockefeller justify consolidation and its results for American consumers. Be sure to include photos, maps, cartoons, etc. in your article and a front cover for your magazine (since your article is the lead story for that issue). Furnish all appropriate facts with sources and citations. You can use any software (Word, PPT, Google Slides) but save your file as a .pdf to upload.
