Questions to Consider:
- What do you know about Bianca's concerns as a supervisor that could help you plan the message? What values/goals do you share that could be put into an opening common ground?
- How can you phrase what you're asking Bianca in terms of you solving an organizational problem? How can you make it sound as if it will benefit all people involved, and not just you Who will be affected?
- What specific information must you give in order for Bianca to evaluate your request? (Think in terms of what you are asking for). How can you design your document so some of the information stands out?
- What objections might Bianca have to doing as you ask? How will you answer them?
- What exactly do you want Bianca to do after she receives the message? Should you give a deadline? If so, what reason would you give for her acting promptly?
Use the following questions as a checklist:
Do you have a subject line that gains attention and at the same time sounds positive? Does your opening summarize the organizational issue, worded positively, with all the necessary details? Do you offer convincing evidence? Does it show there's a need for some kind of action? Does your proposal to resolve the issue elaborate about why it's the best solution? Do you answer possible objections that your boss might have? Do you give a specific call to action at the end of the message, what you want your boss to do next? Be sure you answer -yes" to all of these questions before you submit your assignment.
