Step 1: Go to this website. Bending Light - https://phet.colorado.edu/enlsimulation/bending-light
(Either download or open the "Bending Light' application. Note: this requires Java.) This PhET Interactive Simulation was developed by and provided courtesy of the University of Colorado at Boulder's PhET Project.
Step 2: Using the emitter. Turn on the emitter. Adjust its angle and see how light reflects and refracts from the boundary. Can you find values of the indices of refraction for which all the light is reflected and none passes through? Can you make any generalizations about the conditions under which this is possible? Think about whether one index has to be greater than the other.
Step 3: Using the wave mode. Turn on wave mode and examine what happens to the reflected and refracted waves. Do the wave lines get closer together or farther apart? Does the motion of the wave lines depend on the indices of refraction?
