Autobiographical Essay
For this assignment, you will write an essay of approximately three (full) to four pages about a significant event
from your past. You will need to incorporate both narrative and descriptive writing elements into this essay.
Your narration will focus on telling one story in an orderly, logical sequence; you will not recall all of the
important events of your life or offer biographical facts (birthdate, parents’ names, etc.). Instead, you will select
an occasion when you faced an issue and overcame it. One of our textbooks, Culture: A Reader for Writers,
may give you some ideas for a topic. You should employ descriptive writing to provide specific details for your
readers. You do not need to incorporate outside sources for this project. Your paper must conform to MLA
guidelines. Please keep the following information in mind when you are composing your essay:
Include sufficient detail
Vary sentence structure
Maintain consistent tone, verb tense, and structure
Remember that you are writing for an audience, not yourself
Connect all paragraphs back to your thesis
Keep in mind one purpose and develop it in your essay—you are writing about one event or influence, not
about everything that has happened in your life since you were born
Explore how the conflict has affected you, and Examine the significance of the event or person’s influence on
your life
Objectives:
Engage in the writing process
Learn academic writing conventions, including MLA format
Learn awareness of purpose and audience
