question 1: How can one (not) compare the situation of Dutch Moluccans with other Southeast Asian diaspora, such as seafaring Filipinos described by Swift (2011) or Vietnamese highlanders living abroad as described by Salemink (2006)? (choose either one of two articles to compare)? 100 words.
question 2: Consumption in the case of the Southeast Asian middle classes is often stigmatised as being Western, something that only youth indulges in and it is widely seen as hedonistic and excessive. King (2008) and Isaacs highlight local variation talking about Vietnam and Thailand. Briefly compare the two cases showing how local factors shape these Southeast Asian well to do and the ways what and how they consume. (You may think of the role of youth versus previous generations, the role of the government and the perception of the West in both countries). 200 words
