Background:
Alonzo is a 32 Y.O. recreational soccer player and software develope. He feels that working a sedentary job has caused him to gain 15 pounds. His goal is to return to the weight where he felt the most comfortable and played his best. His Dr gave him a different goal weight based on the Devine equation, but he does not recall the weight. He says he doesn’t remember because he felt that it was too low for him. He recently joined his local gym and has been doing some light cardio and weight machine workouts two times per week. He plays in a soccer league and practices 2 hours per week and has a 90- minute game once a week. He has recently lost 5 pounds and is trying to eat healthier and drink less beer. He has a family history of hypertensiona and diabetes. However, his related lab values and blood pressure are normal.
He has come to visit the sports dietitian for some nutrition advice and is getting some baseline anthropometrics, skinfold and circumference measurements. Using the table below assess his body compoisition with the data you have available. Compare two skinfold prediction equations that fit your data (the Durnin Wormserly and Jackson Pollock) and calculate the ideal body weight his Dr recommended.
● Weight 186 lb Height 5” 10”
● Triceps skinfold 13mm Chest 10 mm Thigh 17mm Abdomen 33mm Biceps 8 mm Subscapular 24 mm illiac crest /suprailiac 17mm
● Waist circumference WC 39 “ Hip Circumference 37”
● Devine Formula IBW (men) = 50kg + 2.3 kg x (height inches -60)
● % usual or ideal weight= Current wt/ divided by ideal or usual weight x 100
● Skin fold formulas may be calculated by hand or look up a calculator or phone APP such as http://www.linear-software.com/online.html

Compare results on the WHR, BAI, BMI and skinfold. Comment on any differences between BF and risk classifications. Compareresults from the three different SF equations to eachother. Do they all suggest similar results? Describe any differences you notice? Why might the eqautions come out differently? Which SF method do you think meets the demographics of our client best? 2 pts
Application
Describe how you might explain the accuracy of the skinfold method to the client. How would you discuss the results of your overall assessment? Which results would you share and why? 2 pts
Alonzo asks for your advice on setting a body weight goal. Based on the results of the assessments and considering the client’s beliefs about a healthy weight for him, what goal weight range would you advise him to set and what rationale do you have for your reccomendation? 2pt
The business has aquired funding to buy a BIA machine The owner has asked for your assistance selecting the BIA to purchase. He has invited different company sales reps to present their product. What questions wold you ask the sales reps to help the owner make the best decision? Which type of BIA would be a good choice for a gym setting (there is an exam room with a table availalble) ? What are some advantages for the client and for the technician of using BIA over skinfolds ? 3 pts
When selecting the brand and type of BIA, what questions should you ask the manufacturer? 1 pt What issues are important to consider and what does the book recommend be avoided ? 1pts What are some factors which will impact the accuracy of the measurements? 2pts
List 8-10 conditions that clients will need to meet prior to the BIA measurements to ensure the best results (8 minimum different procedural conditions should be listed) 2 pts
In a paragraph, describe your detailed monitoring plan using the measurements currently available. Which methods would be useful to monitor Alonzo’s progress and how often would you perform the measurements? How would you reduce the potential for technical error? (at least 3 ways) How would you explain to your client about the ability of the measures to track progress? If BIA becomes available would it be a better way to monitor progress? 4pts
