ASCA School Counselor Competencies

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) provides information and standards to help guide
school counselors in understanding their roles and responsibilities and to help them develop their abilities
and skills to meet the demands of the job.
Read the ASCA School Counselor Competencies, focusing on Professional Foundation competencies.
Based on the standards from the Mindsets and Behaviors Chart, assess your competencies, and determine
which you already possess and which you will need to address during your program. Using the Program
Details found on the GCU website, devise a plan detailing when and how you will meet those competencies
you have yet to master.
In a 500-750 word plan, discuss the competencies you already possess and explain how you will go about
meeting those you do not. Address the following:
• Explain your self-assessment focusing on professional foundations.
• When and how you will meet the ASCA School Counselor Competencies through the completion of your
Master of Education in School Counseling program
• How you will plan for continued growth and development as a school counselor after graduation
