Artist Analysis and Research

Choose two artists from the list below. Go to the library and look for books about these artists (You must go to the library – do not do your research online). Choose 1 painting portrait, one by each of the artists, take a photo of each, and write an analysis of each painting, addressing both formal and conceptual or narrative aspects, and the differences between the paintings (color, composition, use of material, idea). When we speak of formal aspects, we are referring to composition, material, mark making, color, layering of the colors, paint handlings, edge, detail, gesture, how the painting was made. Be specific. When we speak of narrative or conceptual aspects, we are referring to the story, the idea, why the painting was made, what we believe the artist is trying to communicate, how the painting makes us feel. In other words, describe the painting! Make sure to include the artist name, the name of the painting you are describing, the material used, the size of the painting, and what year the painting was made, and include where and when the artist lived.
