In his paper “Why we should create artificial offspring: meaning and the collective afterlife”, (assigned for Unit
9, Week 13) John Danaher provides a two-step argument in favor of producing artificial offspring in order to
give value and meaning to our lives. The first step of his argument consists of stating that one important thing
that gives meaning to the lives of those who live now on Earth is that there will be others living after us, that
humans are not going extinct right after our generation dies. Articulate a reason for and a reason against this
first step in Danaher’s argument.
