Art History
- The Baroque was an international style with local variations in each country, but one constant was a new dedication to evoking an emotional response from the viewer. Choose an object from this chapter (Chapter 23) and conduct a formal analysis to gauge how the artist made choices that would heighten the emotional impact of the work. Be sure to provide the artist’s name, title of artwork, and a date.
- Practice discussing “Unknown” images. Below (scroll down the page) is an image of an artwork that is not in your textbook.
Write a brief description of artwork. Then identify the formal/visual aspects of this work that you recognize (make connection to an artwork that we studied) and identity the artistic period/style (for example “15th century Italian Renaissance” or “14th century Italian art” etc.), from those that we have studied, that you believe this object comes from and explain why. Then based on what you have learned so far in this course provide some information about the possible historical function/meaning of this work. You should be able to discuss these “unknown” images without looking them up. Make sure that you correctly use at least two appropriate art historical vocabulary in your discussion.
