Approaches to Early Childhood
Preschoolers like to investigate! They enjoy learning about the world around them. The Project Approach involves children in studies of the world around them.
Scenario: You are a three-year-old preschool teacher. As a preschool teacher, you have noticed an increased need to create a multicultural and linguistically responsive classroom for your children. For this assignment, you will research how teachers create a multicultural classroom and prepare a lesson that you would teach 3 and 4 year old children about culture. You may use learning centers in your description of the assignment. For instance, you want to teach the children about cultural foods from around the world. You will type out your lesson to include learning objectives, materials, purpose of the lesson, directions to complete the activity, and an assessment at the end.
The assignment must be typed in Microsoft Word and uploaded as a word document of PDF file.
Learning Centers that can be used include:
Computer Area Library Science/Discovery Dramatic Play Kitchen/Cooking Blocks Art
Sample Answer
Multicultural Lesson Plan: "Foods from Around the World"
Children will be able to identify at least two different cultural foods.
Children will be able to use new vocabulary related to different countries and their foods (e.g., taco, pasta, sushi, etc.).
Children will be able to participate in a collaborative activity with peers while exploring a new culture.
Materials
Dramatic Play Center: Props for a "restaurant" from another country (e.g., small sombreros, kimonos, chef hats).
Art Center: Paper plates, colored construction paper, markers, scissors, and glue to create "pretend" food.
Library: Children's books about food from different cultures (e.g., Everybody Cooks Rice by Norah Dooley, Cora Cooks Pancit by Dorina K. Lazo Gilmore).
Kitchen/Cooking Center: Simple, safe ingredients for a hands-on activity, such as tortillas, cheese, and vegetables for making mini tacos or pasta and sauce. A child-safe knife and cutting board.
Purpose of the Lesson
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce young children to the concept of cultural diversity through the universal and enjoyable medium of food. Food is a familiar concept to preschoolers, making it an excellent entry point for learning about how people in different parts of the world live, eat, and celebrate. This lesson aims to foster an appreciation for different cultures, build new vocabulary, and promote a sense of global community in a fun, interactive way.
Directions for the Activity
Introduction (Circle Time - 10 minutes): Gather the children for circle time. Use a world map or a globe to show them different countries. Ask them, "What do you like to eat?" Then, introduce the idea that people in other places eat different, special foods. Read a book from the Library Center, like Cora Cooks Pancit, to introduce a new cultural food.
Learning Center Rotation (30-45 minutes): Divide the children into small groups and direct them to different learning centers.
Kitchen/Cooking Center: Under close supervision, guide children in making a simple cultural dish, such as mini tacos. Talk about the ingredients, where they come from (e.g., Mexico), and how the food is prepared. Focus on the sensory experience—the colors, smells, and textures.
Dramatic Play Center: Encourage children to role-play as chefs or customers in a "taco restaurant." Provide props and encourage them to use the new vocabulary they've learned.
Art Center: Have the children "create" their own cultural foods using art supplies. They can draw, cut, and glue different shapes to represent pasta, sushi rolls, or other foods from the books they saw.
