Chapters 7, 8, and 9
Chapters 7 – skim review this chapter as you have seen it in week 3 and last week
Ch 8 is about ‘risk management’ – pay close attention to information about ‘Medicare fraud’
Ch 9 is all about ‘show me the money’ . . . encompassing an overview of payment/reimbursement processes – carefully review the information on ‘incident to services’

Chapters 13, 19, 20, and 21 (focus on reimbursement, and risk management and legal issues/ethics) –
Ch 13 presents a nice overview of the ‘ethical issues’ we can encounter if the context of practice dynamics [with patients, with organizational culture, with interprofessional relationships, etc.]
Ch 19 – revisit from week 4, Business Planning [a good resource for your project that is due THIS WEEK]
Ch 20 – provides good information on marketing, two types – marketing yourself and marketing your business [which is a good material for review in light of your assignment that is due]
Ch 21 – revisit this reading originally assigned in weeks 2 and 3, it provides a review on regulatory, legal, and credentialing topics

Highlights for discussion one: Value of The APN Model (This information will also be part of your PowerPoint presentation)

Outline and discuss a plan to promote the value of the APN model to the public. (What will you say to the investors about why the APN model is valuable)
Using the latest statistics and evidence, provide a compelling argument and a brief background to the public about why APNP care is essential. (Use statistics about why the APN is valuable and the care they give is essential)
Discuss how you would promote the value of utilizing an APN as a provider of services. (What value do we have over other providers: cost, etc.)
Use data from sources that illustrate how efficient, and cost containing APNPs are versus other health care provider roles. This is not an exercise that diminishes our other colleagues, but one that promotes the value of the APNP role (How we fit in the health care system, collaboration with other providers, not just physicians)
Highlights for discussion two:

You have decided to open your own practice – you now need to gain start-up funding. Picture yourself in front of a group of investors or your local banker –(Use this as part of your PowerPoint) presentation

What will you say to them to convince them that you have a good idea, that your services will be a valuable addition to the community, and that you have the business skills to successfully run a practice?
Discuss marketing, start-up funds, items needed for your practice, etc.
Hints for the PowerPoint: APN as Entrepreneur (Sorry there is no PowerPoint example as I want this to be your work)

Inclusive of references in presentation, and references then fully presented in the final slide of presentation as a reference page (1-2 slides)
Use APA for formatting throughout the presentation
The presentation should be minimally 25 slides, use enough slides to appropriately cover the material being presented
Presentation is to be designed as if you, the APN, were seeking funding for starting your own clinic. (This is the purpose of the PowerPoint presentation)
Presentation to include: The contract portion is to be designed as if the student/APN was seeking a position. What would you as an APN want in the contract? Provide details within the contract about salary, insurances, benefits, duties, etc.
Type of clinic, clientele serving, location
Mission/vision statement
DETAILED budget analysis. Include the expense and revenue reports (what would you anticipate it would cost to start your clinic, be specific, ex: supplies $$ etc)
Insurance and reimbursement: Provide information on expected revenue. What would an APN charge for certain visits (sick versus health check), what is expected pay from insurance types (private, Medicare/Medicaid?) What about self-pay patients with or w/o insurance
The contract portion is to be designed as if the student/APN was seeking a position. What would an APN want in the contract? Provide details within the contract about salary, insurances, benefits, duties, etc. (just a repeat from above so it must be important, right)
MUST USE NOTES SECTION. NO AUDIO. (Use the notes section to discuss content. Professor will be assessing analysis and synthesis of understanding of the content. I need to know what you will say during your presentation for funding your clinic)
