Use examples from the course to critically analyze how media advertisements of soap during the Victorian Age of Imperialism supported “Western” powers’ civilizing missions in their colonies, in addition to consumerism, and commodity racism. Although the “West” no longer has colonies, critical scholars assert that we are in an era of neo-imperialism. From this perspective analyze how commodity racism continues to operate, and to what impact on the bodies and lives of those who are objectified by this sociocultural structural process.
