Analyzing Agnes Varda's Vagabond
Order Description
Group Assignments for Analyzing Agnes Varda's Vagabond
Group One - analysis of cinematography (primarily moving camera)
You will need to watch Vagabond again on your own by going to my Dropbox (www.dropbox.com) using my username ([email protected]) (note dom.edu) and my password
(ilovefilm) - Also, you should look at the 4 minute You Tube video by David Bordwell on the editing of Varda's Vagabond. The link is in Files under Bordwell and
remember, film titles are underlined or put in italics
All papers should include an opening and a concluding paragraph. Please use correct spelling and grammar and remember to underline film titles (or put them in
italics). Final page count should be 3 pages. The opening paragraph should include the basic information about the work: title, director, release date, major
characters (actors names in parenthesis), followed by a brief plot summary of 2-3 sentences (no more). The paragraph should conclude with a discussion of what you
consider the over-all meaning of the work and some commentary on the major themes in the film. The rest of the paper should be devoted to an analysis of your assigned
topic. And don't forget to write a concluding paragraph.
Moving Camera - Provide an analysis that discusses the types of camera movements that dominate the film. Also note any scenes where the camera is still for an extended
period of time (exclusive of dialogue scenes). Comment on why you feel these choices were made and how these choices create a mood or further the major themes in the
film. Also note any discernible patterns you may discover. Then choose 2-3 scenes to analyze closely.
End your paper with a concluding paragraph summarizing your overall understanding of the film and how it was manifested in the formal elements you analyzed and any
final thoughts on the film.
