Chapter one – It is imperative that as you read Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” you are mindful of the different linguistic, rhetorical, and stylistic devices that the author utilizes to convey the horrors of this story. Being an active reader, you are required for this assignment to record five quotes from the text (Chapter Two). The passages may be as short or as long as you prefer. Underneath each passage you are to provide a half page to a page analytical evaluation. As you respond to each passage, question the author’s tone, purpose, organization, diction, symbolism, etc. Ask yourself if the passage ties in with a theme or literary theory. Is the passage effective, or ineffective? You are free to cite specific quotes from your passage in your response for clarification of your analysis.
