In Chapter 5, rising levels of population growth created new political and cultural tensions in
British North America. As our Chapter summary indicates, colonists, both black and white
“became vital consumers of imported goods and important participants in Atlantic intellectual
and religious networks . . .” As imperial tensions came to a head, England defeated France in
the French and Indian War and the formal ending of this conflict unleashed additional tensions
that would ultimately lead to the American Revolution.
