A brief description of the rhetorical situation – what do you know about the occasion and the audience? In other words, what is the purpose of the speech? How is the speaker’s purpose focused on the audience?

What about the type of occasion and audience the speaker was asked to address?  What type of speech is this?  How well did the speaker meet the needs of the occasion and the expectations of the audience for that particular occasion?

Your essay should address at least two of the questions listed below:

1.    How effective was the speaker in structuring the speech? Was it easy or difficult to follow? Offer a brief outline.

2.    To what common values did the speaker attempt to appeal?  How effective was the speaker in establishing commonality with the audience?  Please illustrate with specific examples.

3.    Analyze the speaker’s use of language—what stylistic and rhetorical devices were used by the speaker?  How did such devices enhance the speaker’s message?
