AIRLINE ROUTE & FLEET PLANNING

SCENARIO
You are working in the Fleet Planning Department of a major airline based in Dubai. Your airline is planning a major expansion of its long-haul services with a focus on Chicago and Hong Kong. You and your team (teams of 5 or 6) have been tasked with
(1) conducting an analysis of the performance of the B777-300ER on these two destinations,
(2) comparing the economic performance of the B777-300ER versus the A350-1000 on the two routes
(3) analyzing the financial aspects of the project for each aircraft type in order to make an aircraft selection.

Task 1: Study the aircraft performance of the B777- 300ER when tasked on Hong Kong-HKG to Dubai and Chicago-ORD to Dubai. (30 Marks/100)

Your first task is to study the aircraft performance of a B777 300ER aircraft when tasked on
(1) HKG – DXB and
(2) ORD – DXB
routes.
Your report should contain but is not limited to calculations of
• The TORA, TODA and runway slope of each runway at each departure airport using the data sheets and charts in the Powerpoint slides (and assuming no obstacles, airport elevation as per the airport chart given) the given outside air temperature (25C and 35C), runway condition dry, flap setting 15)
• Use of this information to calculate the ATOW for B777-300ER for each airport/runway
• For HKG-DXB assume ground distance: 3,200 nm, average wind 25 kts headwind, cruise altitude 35,000 ft,
• For ORD-DXB assume ground distance: 6290 nm, average wind 25 kts tailwind, cruise altitude 35,000 ft

Calculate
• The air distance
• The required flight fuel
• The required flight time
• The trip fuel burn per hour
• Required contingency fuel
• Required alternate fuel (with 5% margin)
• Required holding fuel

• Total Fuel Loaded for weight build up purposes
• Calculate and draw the weight build-up diagram of the B777-300ER based on ATOW/LW/ZFW for both flights
• Identify the structural limitation if appropriate
• Define the maximum payload available for the aircraft
• Compare the Maximum available payload to the required passenger payload @110kg per passenger and the cargo payload requirement given
• Calculate and draw the weight build-up diagram of the A350-1000 based on ATOW/LW/ZFW for both flights, using 80% of the fuel weights for the B777-300ER
• Identify the structural limitation if appropriate
