A New Screening Test for MRSA

Two physicians investigated a new laboratory test to screen for resistant staph skin infections. The doctors tested 200 consecutive patients using the new screening

test. They then used the standard (and more expensive) culture test to determine the “Truth.” They found the sensitivity of the screening test to be 90% and the

specificity to be 70%. The prevalence of true staph resistance in their group was 10%.

Draw and label a 2 x 2 table, filling in all the cells and marginal totals
Then calculate for this group: 1.) Predictive value + 2.) Predictive value –
Provide the appropriate calculations. Based upon the test results, indicate whether you would use this particular screening test (why or why not?).

Expectation

Write a Proposal Summary for the RFP. According to the RFP guidelines, the proposal summary should not exceed 300 words and should state the main purpose of the

research, the specific population for the randomized trial, provide an overview of the hypothesis and approach, and describe how this work will move the field of

knowledge forward.
