Option 1: Choose a historically relevant film, novel, video game, or other contemporary medium on which to write a research-based essay discussing its historical accuracy in relation to what actually happened. Major questions that should be addressed include whether the source gets more right than it does wrong, if it accurately describes the events important to history, whether it changes insignificant details or wildly misrepresents fact, and ultimately whether it is a good historical resource. Essentially, the paper should answer the question: if this film were someone’s only knowledge of the historical events portrayed within it, would they leave with a good understanding of what actually happened? Students should be sure to compare their medium to the primary sources they choose as well.
Introduction: Should include fully formed thesis statement.
Body:
Summary of work you chose, and events portrayed within it (shortest paragraph)
Explanation of what the work got right and what it got wrong.
Analysis of both, and how primary source supports your argument.
Conclusion: Proves the introductory thesis statement and determines whether the work you chose serves as a good historical reference.
Option 2: Choose a fictionally based film, novel, video game, or other contemporary medium unrelated to a particular historical event (such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, or X-Men) to compare to a period or event in American history.
