In 2017, a 23-year-old Sikh man named Jagtar Singh was attacked in a parking lot in Surrey, British Columbia. He was punched and kicked, and his turban was ripped off. The attackers shouted racial slurs at him and told him to go back to his own country. Singh suffered a concussion and a broken nose.
This is just one example of the many hate crimes that happen every year. Hate crimes are motivated by prejudice against a person’s race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other characteristics. They are more than just a physical attack. They are also an attack on the victim’s identity and sense of belonging.
