Culture/social community to participate in
Find a culture/social community to participate in. By participating, this means that you should be immersed completely in this culture and interact with the community for a minimum of 1-2 hours. You have the freedom to choose what you do to accomplish this. For example, you may attend any event, party, church service, special occasion gathering, support group meeting, visit a specific place, and so much more!
Once you have selected and participated in the culture/social community you will write a paper reflecting on your
experience.
Use your experience participating in the culture/social community of your choice to reflect on the concepts in
Reading #4. Concepts you should incorporate into your reflection are (not necessarily in this order and does not have to include all of them):
Ethnocentrism vs cultural relativism
Process of Diversity (resistance, assimilation, tolerance, understanding, respect, and participation)
Beliefs, values, norms, practices, and language (verbal and nonverbal symbols)
Standpoint Theory, Muted Group Theory, Face negotiation Theory (as is applicable)
Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT)/Expectancy Violations Theory (EVT)
Bonus for dual perspective and cognitive complexity!

- What were your initial feelings about participating in this culture/social community?
- How did you feel by the end of your time? Still like the fish or less so?
- What did you learn from this experience? What are your big takeaways?
