Sexuality in Midlife and Older Age
Keyword: Sexuality
You will respond to 3 thought question assignments over the semester, one from each topical module. Your response for each should be 2-2.5 pages long (typed, double-spaced, 11 or 12 point Times-like font, 1-inch margins top and bottom as well as left and right). You have considerable flexibility in how you respond to the questions; just be sure to think deeply and write thoughtfully, as well as clearly, concisely, completely and compellingly (my 4 Cs!), Support your statements as needed with other sources and appropriate citations in APA style.
Using “A Study of Sexuality and Health among Older Adults in the United States” (Lindau et al., 2007), Burgess (2004), and what we’ve talked about over the semester, as well as your own experiences and opinions, please read and respond to either (1) OR (2), as well as (3) from the following questions:
(1) From the perspective of a BBH student, please describe the different attitudes of society towards sexuality in older adults vs. younger adults. Using the article as a reference, how do biology, development, socialization, environment, and history contribute to these attitudes? Which one(s) resonate(s) most with you? Why?
OR
(2) Lindau describes numerous reasons for gender differences in the decline of sexual activity in older adults. Using your own words, please elaborate on Lindau’s work by comparing and contrasting gender differences in the decline of sexual activity in older adults. Which reason(s) resonate the most with you? Why?
AND
(3) Clinicians tend to ignore discussions of sexuality and sexual functioning in the lives of their older patients unless the patients bring up the topic themselves. As BBH students, many of you will have jobs in the medical field. Using what you have read from the article, explain how this newly learned information will be useful when discussing the health and well-being of your older patients.
