You will respond to 3 thought question assignments over the semester, one from each topical module. Your response for each should be 2-2.5 pages long (typed, double-spaced, 11 or 12 point Times-like font, 1-inch margins top and bottom as well as left and right). You have considerable flexibility in how you respond to the questions; just be sure to think deeply and write thoughtfully, as well as clearly, concisely, completely and compellingly (my 4 Cs!), Support your statements as needed with other sources and appropriate citations in APA style.
Using the Lazovich et al. (2016) and Swetter, Clarke, & Keegan (2014) readings and what we’ve talked about over the semester, as well as your own experiences and opinions, please respond to either (1) and (3) OR (2) and (3) from the following questions:
1) As noted in the readings, women have higher incidence rates of melanoma, but men have higher mortality rates. Using the articles as a reference, please discuss why you think this gender difference exists. Please consider the roles of biology, behaviors, environment, and historical times in explaining those differences. Explicitly discuss 3 of those 4 factors in your answer.
2) Results from the Lazovich et al. (2016) reading showed women under the age of 40 are likely to start the use of indoor tanning beds at younger ages, and report much higher frequencies of indoor tanning, leading to increasing rates of melanoma in younger women, compared to men. What role do you think gender socialization and historical time play in those differences? Be specific and support your statements!
3) How do these readings relate to you personally AND to your career plans, as many of you will serve as role models for younger children and adolescents and/or have jobs in the medical or public health fields?
