1) Identify the sources and functions of values that guide human practices in science and technology; and 2) Reflect on how values shape personal and community ethics

In the document below, which is the complete 1927 Supreme Court judgment upholding the sterilization of Carrie Buck for eugenic reasons, identify the social values
that shaped the court’s decision and explain how those values functioned to support this decision. In other words, what were the priorities and motivations of the
Supreme Court justices? And how did those priorities and motivations shape their decision?
Please note that I am not asking you to support or oppose the decision yourself, but rather I am asking you to explain what values could have led the Supreme Court to
uphold a decision that most of us would find morally objectionable today.
As usual, the paper is limited to approximately 750 words, does not ask you to research external sources (but rather to explain the document provided), and should be
uploaded to Blackboard by the date specified above.
If you want to read more about the case, a good website is:

to identify and explain the values involved in the decision, not to reiterate the case’s background or to critique the decision.
Given today’s understandings of genetics, neurology, psychiatry, and civil liberties, I believe a strong case may be made that the justices’ decision was wrong, but
there are nevertheless some important historical questions that should be asked: Why did the Supremes Court justices, all of whom were highly educated, rule (in an 8-1
decision) this way? What values were they protecting by upholding the states’ rights to sterilize certain citizens?
