Mono no aware in The Tale of Genji

Mono no aware in The Tale of Genji

Order Description

Give your brief definition of mono no aware, then proceed to explain/describe its use in the excepts from the “Sacred Tree” chapter of The Tale of Genji. Doing this means you have to analyze the text. Compare all three media (Seidensticker’s translation [on Course Site], the anime film The Tale of Genji, and the comic book Asaki yumemishi) regarding the same scene. Which mode of storytelling do you think best conveys the sense of mono no aware? Why?
No outside sources can be used. Use your texts above, pp. 43-45 of Japanese Aesthetics and Culture and the “Notes on Aware” pages (Course Site) only.
Follow the MLA format for parenthetical citations:
(See MLA Citation Style on Course Site [http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/resdoc5e/RES5e_ch08_o.html])
Parenthetical “your quoted sentences here” (McCullough 145). *Period comes after the ( ).
Organize your paper with a solid introduction, definition, and statement about your argument. Then proceed to give details and follow with a strong conclusion.
Give specific examples from the texts. Remember to analyze. Do not simply rephrase a poem or excerpt from the text. Mono no aware is a subjective feeling; therefore the use of “I” in your paper is appropriate. If you prefer not to use “I,” you can use something like “one can see …”
In academic writing, do not use contractions. (Do not use “don’t.”) Spell check and proofread.
Italicize book/film titles and use “quotation marks” for the chapter titles.
An A paper has all the items mentioned above–including good mechanics and solid analysis with clear attempt to examine a passage or excerpt or poems that were not covered in class. See the paper grading criteria handout and grading grid handout.
